Empowering Youth Through English And Confidence Building

The Challenge: India's burgeoning youth population offers immense potential, but employability remains a pressing issue. Many young people lack basic foundational skills such as English speaking and effective communication.

Fluency in English is a foundational skill that opens up multiple pathways for learning and employment. It is a crucial factor for success and global mobility (India Skills Report 2024). Many free educational resources are in English, making fluency essential for learning and upskilling. Additionally, fluency in English is associated with identity and self-pride. However, many young people, including skilled youth, struggle to communicate in English, impacting both their potential for advancement and self-confidence.

Our Work: While educating and skilling our youth is an expansive and complex problem at the governmental level, a narrow focus on conversational fluency in English is amenable to civic outreach.

This initiative provides youth with the resources they need to learn beginner-level English, channel people’s desire to give back and empower our youth, and leverage the convening power of influential local individuals like elected representatives and district magistrates to mobilize resources and facilitate access.

Key Activities

  • Distribution of Learning Materials: Provide each learner with a specially designed English learning book meant for self-study. The multilingual book - prepared in collaboration with respected educationists and illustrators - consists of 21 chapters and supports English language learning through real-world scenarios, offering scripts and conversations that young people can directly apply in their own lives.
  • Weekly Online Classes (Optional): Conduct one-hour online classes every week, facilitated by trained volunteers, to reinforce learning and provide interactive support.
  • Community Partnerships: Collaborate with local elected representatives, district collectors, community centers, and district employment centers to distribute the book and ensure access to learning resources
  • Use of Technology: Use WhatsApp for communication, registration, and organization of learners. This includes sending reminders, distributing learning materials, and collecting feedback. Utilize Zoom/Google Meet for online classes.

If you would like to distribute the book in your area and/ hold online classes, please email us at contact@futureofindia.in
